Frequently Asked Questions

Squeaky Subfloor Repair

"Can you screw subfloors under hardwood & other hard surfaces?"

Answer:

At this time, we can only offer this service for subfloors under carpet. We do not provide this service for subfloors under hard surfaces like wood, tile, LVP, (Luxury Vinyl Plank) LVT (Luxury Vinyl Tile) & vinyl. This is because we are not able to remove the hard surfaces to expose the subfloor.

"What causes squeaky floors?"

Answer:

Most squeaks are caused by the movement of one wood surface rubbing against another wood surface, piping, or duct work. Other squeaks can be caused by loose nails rubbing against wood.

"Is the service guaranteed?"

Answer:

Since we are dealing with a wood framed home, there is always the chance that some squeaks cannot be removed by screwing the subfloor. We will guarantee our work is completed to the extent possible, which means that we will screw down the subfloor along every floor joist with 3-inch screws every 12 inches or less. We will screw every joint of the subfloor on both sides of the joint. If there are still squeaks after our service then the problem is not one that can be solved by screwing the subfloor. At times, squeaks will come from a wall base plate. In that case we can remove the wall base and drill 5” screws into the base plate to adhere it to the subfloor. Once it has been screwed down, we put the wall base back on. We will fill the nail holes and caulk the base. It may be necessary for the client to touch up the paint on the base.

"Do the rooms need to be cleared of all furnishings?"

Answer:

In most cases it is best to remove all the furniture because when we fold the carpet back, we have space to lay it down while we do the subfloor work. If you leave furniture in the room, it limits the space we have to do that. In some cases with larger rooms, we can fix the subfloor without emptying the room completely as long as we have enough room to lay the carpet and pad somewhere in the room.  This will depend on the location of the squeaks in the room.
